State of California Launches Free Child Support App

CA Child Support App

Technology has infiltrated nearly every aspect of the lives of individuals residing in Placer County, including child support matters. This is illustrated by the recent launch of an app designed to make it easy for parents in California to check the status of their child support accounts. The app, CAChildSup, was launched by the California Department of Child Support Services.

Child Support Formula in California

Raising children is an expensive proposition that few fully comprehend before becoming parents. This is true whether parents of children stay in a relationship or decide to end it. For many custodial parents in the state of California, child support from the noncustodial parent of their child is a necessity to make ends meet. The payments a custodial parent will receive from the other parent are based on a statutory formula.

Because it is a formula that is used to determine child support payments it is important that the correct numbers are inputted into it. A variety of information is relevant in addition to how much each parent makes. Other things that are taken into account include the amount spent on medical expenses for the children, how much time each parent spends with the children and how much daycare costs.

The free app will make it easy for parents to do the following:

  • Make an electronic payment
  • Check upcoming appointments
  • Find the closest child support agency
  • Check payment status

With the hectic lives so many parents currently lead, many in California will likely take advantage of the new app. Individuals with both Android and Apple devices will be able to download it.

FAQs

What Is the New Child Support Law in 2025 in California?

Starting January 1, 2025, California implemented new child support regulations designed to ease the burden on low-income parents and promote more balanced support arrangements. Under Senate Bill 1055, individuals earning less than 70% of the area’s median income will no longer face driver’s license suspensions for unpaid child support. In addition, Senate Bill 343 changed how extra expenses like childcare and medical costs are divided, shifting from an even 50/50 split to a proportionate system based on each parent’s income. These reforms aim to create a more reasonable and just approach to child support, particularly for financially vulnerable families.

How Far Behind in Child Support Before a Warrant Is Issued in California?

In California, a warrant may be issued for unpaid child support if a parent falls substantially behind, particularly when the overdue amount exceeds $2,500. While there’s no exact number of missed payments or set timeline that guarantees a warrant, the total balance owed and how long the payments have been delinquent play a major role.

At What Age Does a Father Stop Paying Child Support in California?

In California, child support from a father usually ends when the child turns 18, as long as they’ve completed high school. However, if the child is still enrolled as a full-time high school student at that age, payments typically continue until graduation or until the child turns 19, whichever happens first. Exceptions may apply in cases where the child has a disability that prevents them from being self-sufficient, or if both parents have agreed to extend support beyond the standard age.
